Chief Coordinator PCHR Welcomes PPP and PML (N) historic accord to form coalition government
Islamabad: Mr. Shafique Chaudhry Chief Coordinator Parliamentarians Commission for Human Rights (PCHR) in a press release has welcomed the historic accord (Muree Summit Declaration) of the Pakistan People Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (N) two major winner of the February 18, 2008 to form coalition governments at the centre and in Punjab and to restore deposed judges of the superior court. Chief Coordinator said that this initiative taken by PPP and PML (N) would pave the way for supremacy of parliament, promotion of democracy, respect for rule of law, and protection of human rights in the country.
He told that the coalition government should strive to work for the reconciliation with the other parties to avoid extremes of intolerance.
He told that the parliament’s role was not just to adopt legislation but also analyze and examine it in depth to ensure that it provided a rational response to the demands of the people it has duty to represent. He said that the new parliament should also work to promote political tolerance, end political differences and increase the credibility of the parliament. He appreciated the PML (Q) gestures by accepting its defeat in February elections and its member’s statement to put an example in playing positive role while sitting in the opposition in the newly formed parliament.
He said that the newly elected parliamentarians would play more active role human rights defender and would raise human rights issues on the floor of parliament He said that new parliament would have to face foremost challenges of deteriorating human rights situation in the country and hoped that the it would give priority to the ratification of human treaties and pass the bill for establishing National Commission on Human Rights which remained pending before previous parliament for more than two years.
