Workshop of psychological rehabilitation and trauma

counseling of earthquake affectees

 

 

Islamabad:     A two day workshop under the supervision of National Task Force held at Secretariat of Parliamentarians Commission for Human Rights, Islamabd. Chairman PCHR and National Task Force Mr. Riaz Fatyana MNA inaugurated the workshop with his introductory remarks concerning necessity and importance of trauma counseling for earthquake victims. He said that the workshop is first phase of scheduled program in which at least thirty master trainers are being trained for trauma counseling of quake affectees.

 

Chief Psychologist Dr. Shohaib Shahid delivered his lecture in respect to personality and management of psycho-effects of quake. He said psychological rehabilitation is slow process as symptoms for the same take at least three to six months for complete appearance after disaster.

 

Consultant Psychologist, Professor Dr. Najma Najam Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Women University Rawalpindi presented her lecture on post traumatic disorder and explained its nature in the light of case history of Mukhtaran Mai, Dr. Shazia and Sonia Naz case. Ghulam Murtaza Bodla, clinical psychologist and Vice President of Pakistan Psychological Association gave presentation on the post traumatic disorder and its clinical assessment.  Lieutenant Commander and clinical psychologist from Pakistan Navy, Mr. Fiaz Ahmed outlined psychological ailments emerging out of earthquake trauma and their assessment through projective techniques.

 

The workshop was attended by thirty psychologists as trainers. Talking to the newsmen, Chairman National Task Force Mr. Riaz Fatyana MNA, said that these master trainers will be sent to quake-hit areas to provide trauma counseling to the affected people. They will further train volunteers, teachers, paramedical staff and local social workers as psycho-aid workers. The workshop will concluded on 16th November 2005.
